Kerry Cohen has written a compelling autobiography in Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity. I was captivated. It is rare that I read biographies of any sort. But this one sounded interesting. How honest would she dare to be? What could she have to say to me that I would find pertinent? It felt like she was completely honest. The book had much to say to me. So her promiscuity grew out of a need to be accepted, loved. But it wasn’t truly free, no strings attached, promiscuity. Instead it always had an element of clinging and jealousy to it. Neither men nor women can stand being the subject of that. In all, it was self-validation through another. Now that is a very slippery road to travel. Often, given my past, it felt like I would have been her. But, as she points out, just by being female she had sexual power. We men on the other hand have to work to have sex. Had it been so easy for me, perhaps I would have used that power. And the road out of the quagmire of need, jealousy, and validation through others? Well that is something she almost stumbles on. But perhaps that is a truth too. It is in doing those things that we love, allowing ourselves to love those things that the road out becomes discernable. For Kerry Cohen, it was writing. For me it was music. I suspect there must be something for everyone who has to make that journey. Kerry Cohen’s writing is solid, appropriate. It is not superfluous, nor intellectually bound. It was a simple read with good images, honest emotions. The fact that it was an autobiography made it more compelling. I can recommend this book to anyone who is ready for it. It is a 3.5 star, though I will give it 4 for its honesty and bravery.
