I like this series more with each book. Lots of action in a very short time span. Can't wait for the next one.

I really thought this book was hysterical, and so well written. The author really captured the different voices of all of the different characters making them very real. Ignatius Reilly is such an interesting character to me because we are such opposites. Whereas I always think that I'm in the wrong, he thinks everything he's ever done was right. Ultimately he's pretty miserable, but in the moment, I tend to envy him.

My mom recommended this book (in fact she sent me the original edition of it, quite tattered and old) to read once she found out I was expecting my first child. I expected a bit of an outdated description of natural childbirth preparation, but what followed was a book describing the horrifying past of childbirth pre-Lamaze method. I've always know that childbirth had to be rough in the old days when medical technology was not so nearly advanced as today, but I had no idea how barbaric it could really be. Not only were women put out completely during labour so as not to even know they had the baby or not, but they were placated and patronised by their obstetricians if they wanted to try any form of natural childbirth. It's amazing to think that only about 50 years ago women were not even given a choice of how they want to bring their child into the world! Now this book isn't all doom and gloom. Once the author was made aware of these new methods she learned in France the situation turned out quite a bit, but I was so angry at some of the doctors she comes in contact with in this story. I had to keep reminding myself that this really happened and was a true account of this woman's experience with trying to birth her child naturally. While there are some outdated ideas in it , the general idea is still quite relevant today as after all the human body doesn't change that greatly. I would recommend this not only to any mom-to-be, but also those who've already given birth as it really shows how lucky we really are to have the choices we make in today's world and I have this woman and many like her (including my mom) to thank for standing up to oppressive chauvinist docs to thank for it! Indeed, Thank you, Dr Lamaze! P.S. It includes detailed descriptions of the original relaxation and breathing techniques first used for this technique as well.
