I was late in getting to Willa Cather and it's just as well; I can appreciate her work better now. The Professor's House is fantastic. Her big three are supposed to be O Pioneers, My Antonia, and Death Comes for the Archbishop. The Professor's House is equal and maybe better in my opinion. I love Cather because she does not err when creating a specific place and time. Her prose is poetic at times but always logical. She's easy to read, but can handle the Big Ideas. I have already tracked down more of her "lesser" works and will probably go through them all sooner or later.
I picked this up at the airport before a flight and it did the trick. The last quarter disappoints a bit, but a very absorbing narrative and the writing is imaginative.
