This book is not, as the title would suggest, about the search for the genetic link to obesity. There is a bit of that in there, along with information about the state of gastric bypass surgery, the politics of obesity science and the fast food culture. Although there is some very good and interesting information in this book I found it quite difficult to read because I was never quite sure where she was going at any given moment. Some of it is a quite detailed exploration of the physiological workings of our bodies as they relate to hunger and satiety. And then it’s all about the personalities of the scientists involved – almost a mini biography in some chapters and then she’s off on a diatribe about fast food. It’s not that I disagree with her position but there is absolutely nothing new and the science gets pretty vague. I’d suggest skipping that section all together and reading Fast Food Nation instead.
