A book club pick that none of us really liked in the end. It was an interesting book, well written and easy to read. However, considering this is supposedly a memoir, it was incredible depressing and disturbing. No redemption of the main character, leaving you to assume he makes it out of the hell he was in, eventually.
This novel, translated beautifully from the French by Ina Rilke, captures a unique time in history, the brutal forced "re-education" of intellectuals and their children in China in the early 1970'a. The author was one of these unfortunates and yet the novel is not unduly bitter about fate but dwells on that most important of themes, how a person makes his way through the disappointments, triumphs and erotic moments of life. This book has a great and terrible ending.
a really good story. highly recommended.
