Franzen is such a strong writer - characters fully realized and - in this case - so fully and effectively that I could not stand any of them - the feelings of disconnection and despair in each life were so well drawn that it was all I could do to get through the whole of this work. Read it to educate your inner writer - otherwise - read it if you can bear to read it.
This book has inspired me to find out more about my own family's story.
Argh! So much anger! This book is responsible for most of the incorrect assumptions Christianity has held for centuries concerning male superiority. They are so used to their assumptions that they forget the information is not even biblical! I respect Milton as a writer, but he needs to keep his nose out of such issues. He is obviously grotesquely biased and poorly informed.
